International Women's Day is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
One could say for the LNVH each day is Women’s Day, because every day we aim to promote and sustain equal representation of women in academia, work towards the betterment of the position of women of all backgrounds and push for an inclusive and safe academic community.
On March 8 a lot of interesting events (in English and Dutch) are organized. We would like to highlight a few:
Gendernormen in sport
Radboud Gender & Diversity Studies organiseert ook dit jaar Internationale Vrouwendag. De viering vindt plaats op dinsdag 8 maart 2022 en staat dit jaar in het teken staan van gendernormen in sport. Hoe verhouden vrouwelijkheid en mannelijkheid zich tot elkaar in sport? Welke stereotypes komen we tegen en wat houdt ‘inclusieve sport’ in?
In de ochtend (10:00 tot 13:00) zal de keynote lezing ‘Vrouwenzweet en spierballentaal. Anderhalve eeuw vrouwensport in Nederland’ worden verzorgd door prof. Marjet Derks, hoogleraar sportgeschiedenis en expert op het gebied van sport en gender. Als referent treedt op dr. Nicolette van Veldhoven, lector bij Windesheim en programmamanager bij NOC*NSF. Aansluitend zal er een panelgesprek plaatsvinden.
In the afternoon (13:45 tot 15:15) there’s an English Reading Seminar: Gender and Diversity in Sport. Do you want to discuss how insights from gender and diversity studies can be applied to the context of sport? Or are you a sports fan studying completely different topics here at Radboud? Webinar Being Woman: a Dutch perspective
Starting at 11AM, Market research agency Ipsos In this webinar we demonstrate how to approach gender through a cultural lens. We do this by building on the results of a global Ipsos study about being woman in cultures across the world. De kracht van het verschil: inspiratielunch over diversiteit
De VO-raad en PO-Raad organiseren een online inspiratielunch voor bestuurders, schoolleiders en (HR-) medewerkers van basis- en middelbare scholen, die meer willen leren over diversiteit. Het doel van de inspiratielunch is nieuwe inzichten opdoen over wat diversiteit is en hoe je diversiteit kunt benutten binnen de school. De sessie staat onder leiding van Bureau Vie en duurt van 11.30 tot 12.30 uur. Aanmelden kan via deze link.
Speech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Sigrid Kaag
From 1pm to 2:15pm, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Sigrid Kaag will share her vision on the recently appointed Dutch cabinet’s EU course in the Sint Janskerk located on the Vrijthof. The Netherlands wants to play a leading role in a strong and decisive European Union; in her speech, Minister Kaag will address what the main priorities are in the fields of finance and climate and share the Dutch vision on the EU as a community of values.
This English-spoken event will also be livestreamed. The event is organised by Studio Europa Maastricht. Studio Europa Maastricht is a centre of expertise for Europe-related debate and research founded in 2018 and supported by the partners of the Maastricht, Working on Europe programme: Maastricht University, the Province of Limburg and the City of Maastricht. Mind the Gender Gap
Wikipedia. Het is misschien wel het eerste naslagwerk dat de meesten van ons gebruiken als we iets willen weten. Toch mogen we over de inhoud wel wat kritischer zijn. Er is namelijk sprake van een groot Gender Gap op Wikipedia. Vrouwelijke artikelen zijn zwaar ondervertegenwoordigd. Er is zelfs een Wikipedia-pagina over dit fenomeen: Gender bias on Wikipedia. Jij kunt hier verandering in brengen (ook zonder Wikipedia-ervaring) tijdens deze Edit-a-thon van de op International Women’s Day! Het evenement wordt georganiseerd door Studium Generale, Erasmus Centre for Women and Organisations (ECWO), Wikimedia Nederland en Dr. Laura Braden. Meer informatie is hier te vinden.
Online event Diversity at the Top
The SER organizes the meeting 'Diversity at the Top - Towards a successful approach'. The online meeting will take place from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. This webinar is also the launch of the annual event 'Diversity at the Top'. An important reason for this is the introduction of the 'quota and target figures' law for more diversity in the top as of 1 January 2022. You can register for the event via this link.
Aletta Jacobs Award Ceremony
The University of Groningen Aletta Jacobs Prize 2022 has been awarded to Rebecca Gomperts. She secured the prize on account of her fight for abortion rights and for women to have access to safe, legal abortions. Her organizations, Women on Waves, Women on Web and Aid Access have managed to put abortion high on the political agendas of various countries. The Aletta Jacobs Prize 2022 will be awarded on March 8, 2022 in the Aula of the Academy Building, starting at 3:30 PM. More information about this event can be found here.
Themanummer en Top 50 Women in Sustainable Finance
Lof brengt op Internationale Vrouwendag, 8 maart 2022, in samenwerking met WIFS (Women in Financial Services) de 'Top 50 Women in Sustainable Finance' en een themanummer over ‘goed geld’ uit, die je vanaf nu kunt bestellen. In deze speciale uitgave zet LOF voor het eerst in Nederland de spotlight op de relatie tussen vrouwelijk leiderschap en duurzaamheid in de financiële sector. Beide onderwerpen zijn immers onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden en versterken elkaar. Verwacht een magazine vol interessante interviews met rolmodellen, portretten van experts, tips en tricks voor duurzaam ondernemen en meer rondom het thema 'Women in Sustainable Finance'. Ook gaan we natuurlijk verder in op die Top 50, samengesteld door een professionele vakjury. Het magazine is hier te bestellen.

Remembering bell hooks
On March 8, from 15:50-17:00 European Journal for Women's Studies, ARC-GS, and Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Stavanger organise the online event Remembering bell hooks.
At the end of last year, on December 15, 2021, the African-American feminist scholar bell hooks passed away. A prolific writer, bell hooks has left us with an impressive oeuvre that continues to shape the interdisciplinary fields of feminist theory, African-American studies, as well as thinking intersectionality. From her first book in 1981, Ain’t I a Woman? Black Women and Feminism, to one of her later ones Writing beyond Race: Living Theory and Practice (2012) and more than 30 books in between, bell hooks has elaborately discussed, and thought anew, questions of pedagogy and theory, of representation and reproduction of cultural images of blackness and gender, of class and masculinities, and of love. Tilburg University celebrates International Women's Day with the presentation of a powerful and expressive series of linocut portraits of Women in Academia. Webinar Ashwini Deshpande and Janneke Pieters on women’s work
The gender gaps in pay and labour force participation are real and persistent worldwide. Women often occupy the worst-paid jobs with the least protection, while gender-related social norms often hinder women’s access to better opportunities. How do the processes of economic development and social change affect women’s labour market outcomes? What forces can bring about opportunities for women’s work that truly enhance their economic empowerment? And, what development agendas are most likely to improve gender equality and bring about the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal #5?
UNU-WIDER hosts two leading scholars to share their knowledge on the often complex answers to these questions in a special WIDER Webinar on International Women’s Day starting 15:00 CET. Ashwini Deshpande and Janneke Pieters are the editors of a forthcoming Journal Special Issue in World Development to feature pioneering research from UNU-WIDER’s project Women’s work — Routes to social and economic empowerment which assesses the importance of different supply-side and demand-side determinants of women’s economic wellbeing in the Global South.

Vrouwen in de inlichtingenwereld
Het thema van Internationale Vrouwendag van 2022 is #Break-the-Bias. WIIS-NL en the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) vieren dit door een evenement te organiseren over vrouwen in de inlichtingenwereld. Simone Smit, plaatsvervangend directeur-generaal van de Algemene Inlichtingen-en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD), zal een achter-gesloten-deuren gesprek houden, van 18:15 - 19:30 uur, waarin ze het zal hebben over de rol van vrouwen binnen het de inlichtingen wereld.
Als we naar de media en het discours kijken, worden vrouwen in inlichtingen vaak gezien als 'femme fatales' of 'honey traps’. In werkelijkheid spelen vrouwen op vele niveaus een instrumentele rol in deze organisaties. Dit evenement geeft je de kans om met de Simone Smit te praten over manieren waarop gender en nationale veiligheid op het niveau van inlichtingen op elkaar inwerken. Audiotour Utrecht
Universiteit Utrecht organiseert dit jaar op 8 maart een audiotour door de stad. Tijdens het luisteren volg je onder andere de sporen van het slavernijverleden in Utrecht en maak je kennis met de eerste zwarte vrouw die als arts afstudeerde aan de Universiteit van Utrecht. De audiotour wordt op 8 maart gelanceerd op Soundcloud en Spotify.
De representatie van vrouwen in kunst en musea
Het Rijksmuseum organiseert 8 maart een internationaal symposium over de representatie van vrouwen in kunst en musea. Al ruim 50 jaar wordt er al onderzoek gedaan naar vrouwen binnen de kunstwereld. Toch vinden we hen nog te weinig terug in de geschiedschrijving, kunst en musea. Hoe zien we vrouwenverhalen terug in een museale context? Verschillende interessante thema’s worden belicht door experts in vrouwengeschiedenis en kunst. Tickets voor het symposium zijn te koop via deze link.
De vrouwen van het Mauritshuis
Op 8 maart zet het Mauritshuis de schijnwerper op vrouwen die het lukte zich naar de top van de 17e eeuwse kunstwereld te schilderen. Tijdens rondleidingen en lezingen krijg je een kijkje in de dagelijkse praktijk van sterren als Clara Peeters, Michaelina Wautier, Judith Leyster en anderen.
